Dear Friends,

First and foremost, we hope you and your family are safe and healthy. Now that we are returning to a new normal we would like to invite you to a special evening of Haitian barbeque and a film screening of “Madan Sara” at Tree Pittsburgh’s stunning riverfront property in Lawrenceville on Friday, September 3rd 2021.

In Etant Dupain’s hour-long documentary, “Madan Sara”, the women in Haiti known as Madan Sara are highlighted in how they work through a system of self-produced pathways to buy, distribute and sell food and other essentials in markets around the country. The Madan Sara are the supply chain in Haiti, and they are Haiti’s essential workers. They bring produce from the farms to the markets even in the face of limited investment and infrastructure. The Madan Sara are essential and vulnerable yet persevere to be one of the most critical parts of the Haitian economy.

We draw a connection between Madan Sara in the film and the farmers that participate in our Haiti Timber Re-Introduction Program. The farmers working with HTRIP depend on the system of Madan Sara to distribute their produce, livestock, charcoal and timber. Also, as 50 percent of participants in HTRIP program are women, many of them are Madan Sara. Frequently, many of these women make long walks from their remote mountain farms to the large markets in big towns like Veret and Petit Rivier every Wednesday and Saturday.

Over the last 15 years Haiti Friends has supported farmers in the Artibonite Valley region of Haiti through our HTRIP program. We provide free education and support to farmers through our team of Agroforestry Technicians. Along with the education we provide free tree seedlings, which we grow in our community nurseries. Our program has helped thousands of farming families over the years improve soil quality and increase food production and household incomes, as well as produce renewable resources. All of this is possible because of you, our supporters.

We invite you to join us for a screening of the film, “Madan Sara” followed by a Q&A with the film’s creator Etant Dupain. Through this film we want to give you a glimpse into the life market women and how the supply chain works in Haiti, so you can better understand those who benefit from our Haiti Timber Re-Introduction Program. The event will be catered by Haiti Friends’ Executive Director Edward Rawson’s award-winning Miami-based Haitian Barbecue restaurant Bon Gout BBQ.
